About MOWAA

Q: What is MOWAA and when was it established?

A: MOWAA (Museum of West African Art) is an independent, non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of heritage, expansion of knowledge, and celebration of West African arts and culture. It was established in 2020.

Q: Where is the MOWAA Campus located?

A: The MOWAA Campus is located in the historical heart of Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria.

The official address is 1 Sapele Road, Benin City, Edo, Nigeria.

Q: How can I stay updated on MOWAA’s activities and events?

A: You can sign up for MOWAA’s mailing list on their website, www.wearemowaa.org or send an e-mail to comms@wearemowaa.org.

Q: What is the MOWAA Institute and what facilities does it offer?

A: The MOWAA Institute is the cornerstone of the MOWAA Campus, spanning approximately 4,300 square meters. It includes state-of-the-art facilities for archaeological research, conservation, and public programming, featuring an exhibition gallery, conservation and material science laboratories, a 100-seater auditorium, conference rooms, and a multimedia library.

 

About Museum in the Making

Q: When is the official preview of MOWAA taking place?

A: The hard hat preview of the Institute building, called “Museum in the Making,” is scheduled for November 4 & 5, 2024.

Q: How can I attend the Museum in the Making event in November 2024?

A: Attendance to the events on November 4 & 5, 2024, is by invitation only. For more information, contact events@wearemowaa.org.

Q: Will there be public access to the MOWAA Campus after the official preview?

A: Yes, the Campus will be open to the public every Friday from 10AM-4PM from November 11 to December 20, 2024. Pre-booking is required through a simple online form which you can access here.

Q: What is the inaugural special exhibition and when will it be launched?

A: The inaugural special exhibition will be unveiled in April 2025, along with the launch of residencies and the 2025-2026 programs.

 

Logistics

Q: How can I book accommodation for the MOWAA opening event?

A: There are a number of hotels and accommodation options within Benin City.  MOWAA has also pre-booked rooms at recommended hotels in Benin City at preferential rates. Depending on availability, guests can book their stay using a MOWAA discount code, which can be requested when sending an RSVP.

Q: Will transportation be provided during the event?

A: Yes, MOWAA will provide shuttles from the airport to recommended hotels and for transfers between partner hotels and the Campus on November 4 & 5.

Q: Are there any accessibility provisions for visitors with special needs?
