What We Do
MOWAA is an independent non-profit institution dedicated to the preservation of heritage, expansion of knowledge and celebration of West African arts and culture. To do this, we provide exceptional infrastructure and programmes for the preservation, display, research, learning and exchange in arts and culture from a world-class campus in the heart of the historic district of Benin City, Nigeria.
Artists in Residence
This quarter, MOWAA welcomed its first artists-in-residence, marking a milestone in our journey as an institution dedicated to centering the perspectives of artists and creatives. From artists to poets, we welcome all artistic and cultural exchange
Collections & Conservation
Through our curatorial and collections management practices, we work to preserve, study and showcase the rich artistic and intellectual heritage of West Africa and its Diaspora. We cater to curators, conservators, artisans and artists across a spectrum of disciplines and media, providing access to our growing repositories, deploying commissions, and strengthening the networks that sustain creative practice on the continent.
Research & Education
MOWAA’s educational programmes are designed to generate new insights into African history and creative endeavours, to preserve and reinforce connections to art and heritage within local and global communities, and to inspire a new generation of young professionals and scholars.
Outreach & Community Engagement
Across our interventions, MOWAA strives to share knowledge and meaningfully connect with wider audiences. We deliver this by sharing digital learning programmes and publications, as well as through workshops, seminars, and other events on our Campus and beyond.
Archaeology & Heritage Management
MOWAA brings together archaeology, material science, and advanced conservation practices to protect and study West Africa’s heritage. With expertise and facilities to carry out excavations, analyse found materials and pioneer new methods of preservation, we’re building capacity on the continent that ensures our heritage is safeguarded with rigour and contextual relevance.
Music & Live Performance
MOWAA’s ethos has always aimed to incorporate other means of expression/ supporting and giving platform to emerging creatives. Beyond visual arts, MOWAA’s curatorial vision captures spoken word, music and live performance: a holistic curatorial approach that values method as much as outcome and values the complexity of heritage while opening pathways to new cultural futures.
